After trying to win an online reservation for several weeks before my trip in July, I immediately realized that it would be almost impossible to make the previous Tee time. After a quick search on the web for tips and tricks to make time, I came to the conclusion that I had to set the alarm and try my hands running.
So, the day when I decided to walk and play Torrey Pines, I arranged my alarm for 3 am, prepared in an instant, packing some snacks and water, and headed to the course at 3:40 am to jump in the queue (and hope I could find a place to take coffee and breakfast before playing).
I arrived around 4 am, in total darkness. My driver hardly wants me to leave a shuttle -Intact because he does not see the signs of life on a golf course that is almost quiet. I told him that I was sure I knew what I was doing, threw my bag on my shoulder, and started walking along the path to what I thought was Clubhouse with the lights on the hallway. When I get closer, I can start seeing other golfers who are queuing to search for the morning.
When I queued, it became clear to me that everyone was a local person, a regular in this TEE time game, or from a bright California state with this course on the list that must be played. When word got out that I had traveled throughout the country for this experience, I quickly made friends with 6 golfers who were in front of me in the queue. They all eager to welcome me about what they call ‘sweat lines’ … The line you stand sweaty until your name is called for Tee time. Everyone who knows that my preference is a southern course and is rooting for me because we are all waiting anxiously.
Finally around 5 am, the pro shop was opened and I was able to enter my name on the single list and was told by the starter that my chances looked good. Fiuh! Now I am on the list, it’s time to look at the pro shop! I know that at the end of my round, I will return to buy some memorabilia and buy some prizes for fellow fanatical golf!
When the sun starts to rise, I can get breakfast directly on the place in ‘The Grill at Torrey Pines’ (connected to the cottage). After I finished, I heard my name on the loudspeaker to report to the starter! I have secured at 9 am in the southern course! The green fee for the southern course is $ 220.
After reaching the reach, placing, and using the short game area finally the time! I was very eager to start this trip and was very fortunate to be paired with 3 people I had met in the ‘sweat line’. For me, all stars lined up!
My day at Torrey Pines was completely fantastic! This course is in an extraordinary condition from Tee to Hijau. In addition, I was paired with the 3 best play partners I have ever followed! That is the four dream! We are not only walk-ons but we are also at the same age and waiting for a pleasant day at Torrey! We are fortunate enough to have one member of our group to bring GO-PRO and record unforgettable moments on the field … Additional Bonus!
When I tie the ball in hole #1, I can feel my heart beating fast in my chest! I decided to play a mixture of green and white Tee to make a yardage about 6400. When I brought my driver out in hole #1 and tied the ball up, Tiger Challenge had officially started! I started the day equivalent to the first hole that quickly calmed me and allowed me to start enjoying this beautiful day and experience. One of my favorite holes throughout the day is #3 (par 3 signature), Tee’s shot decreased with the Pacific Ocean as a background, really amazing. Personally, I reached 9-besi into green, leaving it short, and then up and down to equal (feelings above the world)!
After turning in #9, the whole sky is seasoned with paraglider soaring above the head. The view of Torrey ‘came out of this world’! This course continues to surprise me with complicated green vegetables, greenside bunkers that are not familiar, and fairway that require accuracy. I know that I was earlier in the challenge of my tiger, but this experience will be difficult to above it!
Approaching #18 I can’t wait to walk on the same fairway and play the same hole as Tiger did when he won the US Open in 2008 basically on one foot! When I play the hole, I can remember again to watch Tiger on television gripping his left knee and defeating Rocco Mediate in the playoffs. Of course, I have to take a photo of a plaque that commemorates Tiger’s extraordinary victory!
While I know I only played one course from my 17 list, this experience was amazing! If you have the chance to visit La Jolla, you should place Torrey Pines in your travel plan! I hope to return in the near future to play North Course and check the championship site from my Tiger Challenge list!
Look forward to reporting back to the course and other experiences on my trip!
See you at Fairway!
