Pregame Talk Sets Stage for Oregon’s Beatdown of Oklahoma State – Bofa Sports

The results on the field speak harder to the university sports landscape that is always changing.

There are cases where someone can say “The more things change, the more they remain the same.” That itself sounds contradictory, but there are some items that remain consistent through all additions and reductions. In other cases, if someone does not want to evolve with the times, they will be left behind, and eventually, become obsolete. Just like many things in life, the sport of tertiary institutions (special soccer) is an example of this, and there is a game that directly talks to the case where one team moves over time, while the other is jammed in the 2010s. The contest (if anyone wants to call it so) under the spotlight is between Oklahoma State and Oregon, playing last Saturday afternoon at Pacific Northwest.

The duck destroyed Cowboys 69-3, and even with that score, the game might not be that close. Not much must be surprised by the results, because Oregon is a national title challenger who is ranked fourth in this country, while the state of Oklahoma slides from the cliff to an uncertain time. What triggers more conversations than the real game is a pregame comment made by Cowboys Mike Gundy’s head coach, in connection with how much money is spent by Oregon to collect their list. Gundy referred to his program to spend “around $ 7 million over the past three years,” and Oregon expenditure “approached $ 40 (million) only ago.” Apparently, the ducks took the comments as coaches to their coaches, and Lanning, and they were ready to give an explosion of epic proportions.

After a little analysis, logical to trust Gundy’s comments to add fuel to the duck shot, but listening to what he said shows something far bigger than just this game. As mentioned earlier, university sports developed at the daily level, and the goods that lead constant changes are names, images and forms (niles), and portal transfer. After Nile kicked during the summer of 2021, the campus sports landscape passed (and still absorbing) seismic shift. Now, players are allowed to build income through third parties, and evolution has reached a point where athletes can negotiate zero agreements with the university itself (house settlement). Combine this with a transfer portal, where players can basically enter a collection of free agents that are glorified, and the influence of the head coach in a program is not as big as before. In other words, days of amaterism can be expressed as a distant memory.

It brings us back to Gundy and the program at Oklahoma State. Although there is still much to be said about the recruitment of middle school athletes, zero and transfers is here to remain, and if a coach cannot evolve with the times (just like anything else in life), he will float to be irrelevant. Money must be spent if a school wants to remain competitive, and this is something that is clearly understood by Oregon. Even with the money spent, the coach’s responsibility to prepare a team to play Sunday by week, and there is a performance in recent years where people can ask if Gundy has lost contact with athletes today. Of course, ducks have a better team, but cowboys come with not inspired and lethargic, basically defeated before the match even starts. When Gundy made the comment (and tried to clarify after the fact), they sounded more like the innate reason for the next Beatdown.

From the outside looking inside, it seems that the time for Gundy to withdraw from his position is too late. Stubborn to remain with a tool that functions in 2015 shows that they will not work in 2025 and so on. The head coach does not have all the strengths anymore, and there is a need to understand players have the potential to make as much money as they do. It was not a coincidence that Nick Saban, who did not seem to want to be much in connection with the changes in change, decided to retire from Alabama after the 2023 season. For Gundy, there are two choices to choose. Either move for someone with a fresher mind, or get evolution. If the answer is the first, housing as received by the State of Oklahoma from Oregon will be a norm, and the choice for Gundy to stay will be made for him.
