For our poetry making series, we ask the poet and translator to dissect the poetry they have contributed to our page. “The party at the US” Patricia Lockwood appeared online today. The poetry “Perfect Pussy,” “The Ventifact,” and “Cave Painting” appeared in our new autumn edition, no. 253.

How does this poem begins? Is that with pictures, ideas, phrases, or something else?

This one incident is almost funny literally. I am recording an audio book for my new novel, Will there be something elseIn a studio in Savannah, Georgia, and after my first session, the sound engineer told me that Miley Cyrus had recorded the “party at the US” at the booth. (Why not tell me before, so I can call his strength?) On the second day, when we rest for lunch, I saw my phone and saw that my sister had sent an SMS about the active shooter at the hospital where she worked. Nothing makes you feel more stupid than just eliminating your bra on the “party” when reading a book about your small life so you can get more air into your idiot diaphragm than the one who suddenly your sister sends you words “we are locked.”

Do you think of poetry or other works of art when you write it?

I. Many details in the poem were taken from the classic 1980 Roger Shattuck Forbidden Experiment: Aveyron Wild Boy Storywhich was sent to me by NYRB.

Where do you write this poem? Do you have a photo of your workspace or workspace?

I have a picture of the best workspace ever asked by anyone – in front of the Berlian Miley record for “the party in the US,” which was called his voice as his most valuable property. (I dressed like me in the Armadillo Marine because the comfort at STAN was the most important.) When I was recording, we were on a planned trip to Key West, and I finished the poem on the back porch of our vacation rental in the morning. It faces a pool full of Midwesterner which is poisoned by the sun on American tank top-flag, which seems right.

What are the challenges of this special poem?

This trick is balance. It is part of the sequence of diaristic poetry where Everything came in—What is what I do, read, eat, hear. The entire idea is out in the world. But it is far more difficult to work in active shooters and have anything, because active shooters according to definition are unreasonable elements. There is something about the image of the baby peck (coworkers) who climbed to the table with a bottle of bourbon that allowed us to enter it, I thought, because it was specific details, what a person might do at that time.

Where did the roast potato come from?

Baked potatoes loosely pulled from the description of Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre about the preferences of wild boys; Baked potatoes are the first food he will receive, even though he then comes to eat wheat bread, chestnut, “peas, peanuts, and green walnuts.” He has a little Haversack that he brought with him that contains these trusted items, but I have generalized it here to the roast potato. He also refused alcohol and said to take a sip of water slowly while looking out the window as if he was drinking a view.
