MILAN — Mario Colombo, president of Italian sportswear stalwart Colmar, has died at the age of 71.
The cause and place of death are unknown.
As a member of the third generation of the family company, he joined Manifattura Mario Colombo & C. SpA, parent of the Colmar skiwear brand based in Monza, Italy, in 1972. At that time the brand was synonymous with the country’s ski athletes who had outfitted champions such as Gustav and Roland Thoeni, Piero Gros, Paolo De Chiesa and Helmuth Schmalzl, among others.
Colombo steered it past the 90s — when they supported athletes like Deborah Compagnoni and Alberto Tomba — and into the new millennium, expanding the brand’s footprint into the lifestyle segment with the launch of the Originals collection.
Through the latter, Colmar connected with a number of fashion designers, including Shayne Oliver for his AGE project and, most recently, with White Mountaineering’s Yosuke Aizawa.
Through its skiwear division, the brand has become an international outfitter of winter athletes, most recently supplying equipment to French, Slovenian and Belgian teams.
“During his more than 50 years of professional activity, Mario Colombo played a central role in the company’s development, distinguishing himself through his expertise, vision and dedication,” the company said in a statement Monday.
“Aside from his entrepreneurial commitment, he will be remembered for his extraordinary human qualities: his smile, his warmth, his friendliness and his ability to make anyone feel comfortable in any circumstance are the qualities that have always defined him,” he said.
The company is led by Colombo with his cousins Giulio and Carlo, co-chief executive officers.
Colmar executives will lie in state at the company’s headquarters in Monza on Thursday from 9am to 6pm.
The funeral will take place on Friday at the Duomo cathedral in Monza.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
