On May 31, Taiwan Steel Sky Eagle’s professional volleyball team held a test meeting. Among the 24 participants, a familiar figure appeared – Dong Liyi, who had been chosen as the Chinese male volleyball team many times and won the best free agents at the Asian Cup.
In the past, he had represented the Chinese team in the Asian Cup, helped the team to win the fourth place, and even won the best free agents with extraordinary performance. He also participated in the World men’s volleyball league (level 3) and won the fourth place. He is a member of the golden generation of the Chinese male volleyball team. After graduating, he faded out of the stadium and was silent for a while.

“I had no purpose at that time, and I did not have the motivation to continue playing after leaving the community.” Dong Liyi admitted frankly. Once upon a time, Daniel, a foreign assistance from the Zhongkun team, invited him to challenge him abroad, but lost the opportunity because of the status of his students and did not face the right opportunity after graduation. Only after the birth of the Taiwan Professional Alliance, he returned the fire in his heart: “I did not wait for someone to come to see me this time. I took the initiative to ask and fight for it.”
Now, he works as an engineer in a natural gas company in Kaohsiung. His work was stable and his income was good, but he still chose to release everything he had and hoped to get the opportunity to return to the arena. This is not a moment of encouragement, but the choice after careful consideration. “Because I was on the international stage, I always dreamed – to be a professional player and make a living with volleyball.”
Seeing Lai Xiangcheng, who has the same class, becoming famous abroad, Dong Liyi not only admires him, but also feels the power of the driving force. “We are all relatively small players. Seeing the short girl shining and heating, I also think I can try again!”

For this test meeting, he lost 11 kilograms in just two months and made every effort to prepare for battles. From studying in the north to returning to Kaohsiung to work, now he wants to prove himself in his hometown again.
He also laughed and said that he was actually a loyal fan of the Baseball Taigang team and will almost always support him at home. He initially planned to wear a Taigang jersey to participate in today’s test meetings, “But then I want to say that it is better to be more professional.” Kind and enthusiasm like that also gives him more connections with “Taigang”.
He was born in Fengshan and hopes that one day, the resources and attention of professional volleyball can go south more. He said it simply but firmly: “This time, I don’t want to leave regret.”
